Reading log: March / April 2026

I missed making this for March, but for better or for worse I only read two books in these two months anyway. Of course, I hope to read more stuff in May. The book I just picked up is super dense so we'll see—I'll be proud if I can actually finish it!

! = Priority

CR:

Putin's People — Catherine Belton
The First Bad Man — Miranda July

TBR:

These Violent Delights — Micah Nemerever
Notes from Underground — Fyodor Dostoevsky (!)
The Brothers Karamazov — Fyodor Dostoevsky
Hamlet — Shakespeare
The Waves — Virginia Woolf
Confessions of a Mask — Yukio Mishima
The Passion — Jeanette Winterson
Piranesi — Susanna Clarke
Stasiland — Anna Funder
Carol / The Price of Salt — Patricia Highsmith

AR:

The Stone Gods — Jeanette Winterson
A Farewell to Arms — Ernest Hemingway

Every day my TBR gets longer and longer and every day I can't find any of the titles on there in the library or anywhere. Why am I cursed like this? It would be a lot easier if I could just feel comfortable reading on a screen, but I really prefer to read traditional paper books. Sigh.

Anyway, the book that I just started is really long. According to reviews it's a bit of a slog and a lot of information to absorb even for people who are more historically intelligent than me... so wish me luck! I might give up on it, but I'll try my best.

Reading thoughts: A Farewell to Arms

DON'T GET MAD AT MEEEE!!!

I fell off of reading because my life is a mess and I'm a terrible person. I borrowed this and slacked off on reading until the day I had to return it, at which point I read it all in one day. Okay, that's good actually. It says something good about the book that I was able to read it in ~3 hours, since not a lot of books manage to keep my attention for that long at a time.

Starting this novel, I didn't have super high expectations. It wasn't on my TBR list nor did I feel any strong interest to read it at all—it honestly seemed kind of boring and stuffy. But when I did read the first few chapters more than a month ago, I surprisingly enjoyed them, and the rest of the book was much the same! I mean, it might be partly because of those low expectations, but I did like A Farewell to Arms more than I thought I would.

That's not to say it totally blew my mind or that I absolutely loved it, but I did enjoy it.

The main characters are sufficiently endearing in their own way. I can't say I was too drawn in or invested in their romance, being straight and all, but I didn't hate their dynamic. Some of their interactions were sweet and fun, but I didn't think Catherine had any depth to her character all, or even a purpose and personality outside of being Frederic's love interest. She is nothing more than a dedicated and lovely prize for Frederic to have and pine for. It definitely is a bit misogynistic but since there's barely any characterization in the book in the first place (not really an emphasised aspect) for anyone other than Frederic, I guess it's kind of excusable, or at least it didn't bother me too continuously while I was reading. Rinaldi was fun as well, and I think the other characters, however brief, were also enjoyable to read about with their interactions with Frederic.

Of course, the main "point" of the book is its themes and its commentary on war. I think you can very clearly tell that Hemingway himself served in the army and that he was drawing from his own experiences. It's not dramatic or glamorized at all, which I like, and was very well-portrayed. It wasn't the most interesting or even mind-blowing thing to read, but I did appreciate the perspective. You know, as someone who's never fought in World War I.

When it comes to the writing style, I'll give it this: it was very easy to read. That was part of why I finished it so quickly. It's fast-paced, it doesn't use very complicated vocabulary or sentence structure. But that's not to say it was very flat or not entertaining to read! I think this kind of writing fit it perfectly, emphasising both the mundanity of the war and how simple and normal our protagonist is. And even though there was no flowery prose or fancy vocabulary, that didn't lessen the effectiveness of certain scenes!

My criticisms of this book are just that it was lacking. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with my own personal taste, but though I liked reading this book most of the time, I don't think I ever truly loved it. Maybe it's because the characters weren't particularly strong or likeable to me, or the fact that there wasn't a very clear fast-paced "main" story to follow. In a sense, the novel accomplished what it was trying to do, it's just that what it was trying to do wasn't really for me.

As a whole, pretty enjoyable, but nothing special. The historical perspective was definitely my favourite part. I'd recommend this if you want to read about the experience of being alive and serving during WWI, and if you're looking for something that's easy to read but still insightful and touching. 7/10.

I will be taking myself to bed once this is posted because I am rather meh.

1. one creative thing I did today

It was not a good day for fiber arts.

So, May is almost here, which means the current round of Nerdopolis is ending, and I have yet to make anything for it. I dutifully tried to make something today: a pocket tissue cozy.

First I tried a knitted one, using the suggested needle size. I didn't get far before deciding I hated it. I was going to drop down in needle size (...several sizes) and try again, but the yarn wouldn't cooperate and for once I didn't have patience to deal with it.

So I gave up on that, and tried a crocheted one, but I hated how that was coming out too, even though I had only done a few rows. Today was just not a day for yarn crafts.

I opened my [community profile] getyourwordsout Habit Tracker tonight to see where I was for the month and well, it's bad. But I did write one day, and that is one day more than I would have done if I wasn't attempting GYWO. I'm gonna try to get some more writing done in the next few days.

2. one thing I'm proud of today

My job is a set-your-own-hours contract position. I love it, honestly. It's perfect for my lifestyle right now.

I usually set a goal of working 3 hours a day, but Mondays are not good days for me and I often fail to meet that goal. Today I not only met it, but exceeded it. I finished the current sheet I was working on, because I wanted it done. So I'm ahead of schedule for the rest of the week now, which may mean I don't end up working 4+ hours of Thursday or Friday again. That'll be nice!

Also felt therapy went well today, but that's all I'll say on a public post.

3. video game progress

Hahahaha nope. I had vague plans to play some Tactics after dinner, but mom needed help/needed me to listen to her rant about Facebook, and by the time we were done it was 8pm. And I'd have to hook up my Switch again because I brought it up to dogsitting, and well, TOO MUCH LIKE WORK.

I thought about messing around in FFXIV but was too tired for that, and besides, would rather save FFXIV energy for new patch tomorrow. I plan on doing the alliance raid first thing in the morning! And then MSQ after work/lunch.

Okay, I did play some WordScapes today, but I usually do, so ??? -- I'm of the opinion that casual phone games DEFINITELY count as gaming, but there's not much to report about an ongoing casual game. Though I will complain that some of their goals are ridiculous. Dear WordScapes: you are a WORD GAME. Folks like me are going to play maybe 20-30 minutes a day, tops. Why are you making it so the best achievements take considerably more time? ....okay, yes, I know: they want money, and think the way to get it is to have you play more. Well. I paid my $2.99 to remove ads from it ages ago, and I'm too good at the game to require hints (no seriously, I have like 15 rocket hints collecting dust, and it's NOT because of fear of using them like fear of using Elixirs in RPGs) so there's nothing to entice me to spend money. I'm happy with my 3-5 puzzles before bed.

Because of Three Weeks for Dreamwidth, I've discovered the [community profile] fanmix_monthly community which sounds fun! But I admit I would be terrible at making fanmixes, because my primary fandom is Final Fantasy, and the only music I listen to is... Final Fantasy. You see the issue there? lol.

Anyway! They are doing a prompt fest! Folks leave a comment with a fandom (and optionally, characters) and others comment with a song that reminds them of that.

My comment is here, and I'm looking for non-Final Fantasy songs that remind you of Final Fantasy XIV characters (except Zenos, I can't stand him.) I thought I'd post here because there's a handful of you following me who are FF fans... maybe you have some ideas?

State of the FTH fics

So I had two auctions, but also accepted second highest bidder on both, and both took me up on that.

Fic 1 is, as of a couple hours ago, complete and sitting in my unrevealed collection so I can re-read it in a few days.

Fic 2 (which will be multi-fandom short fics) has 1 completed fic, and is in brain-marinating mode for the next bit.

Fic 3 (which will have multiple fics in a single fandom) has a completed fic and the beginning of the 2nd.

Fic 4 will likely be the next one I finish, as it needs maybe 2 scenes to be done and join fic 1 in the unrevealed collection.

My intent is to complete ALL of them first, and then release them over the span of a week or so. Hopefully in May. I have continually reminded myself they are not due until Dec 31 this year, that I can take the time, and taking the time leads to better end results.

Music Monday - A

I've been wanting to do music posts for a while, but I've kept putting it off, because... Well, it's doubtful people will be interested since 95% of what I post is gonna be country, and most of my f-list don't listen to country. So I guess this will mostly be for my own benefit, but I hope at least someone might find something they like.

I'm going to just post 4 or 5 songs each time, and probably an instrumental track, because I love great picking.

Not much today because a good portion of the day was spent getting ready to go back home and then getting there, but YAY I'M HOME! I had a fun "vacation" with the dog, but glad to be back in my own space.

1. one creative thing I did today

Worked on a swatch for a knitted tee. Just a row or two, but I touched it.

When I got home, I did some searching on Ravelry to find something for a Nerdopolis challenge. For those new around here: Nerdopolis is a crafting tournament in which we get themes to craft to. One of the themes this month is "deep space objects", so I've been looking for stuff that is reminiscent of spiral galaxies.

I found a great hat that I wanted to knit, but (a) I wasn't sure I'd have time because it was densely knit worsted weight AND double-layered, (b) I went to purchase it and it said "This designer is not taking payments at this time." Tried their Etsy store, and it's closed. Ah, well. I had previously started a crocheted doily that I might finish, but I wasn't digging it, so I dunno. The end of round is coming, though, so I'll need to make SOMETHING.

2. one thing I'm proud of today

I cleaned the house before I left, to my satisfaction. Also left a note to say how good the dog was, here's some things they should know about, and thanking them for trusting me with their home and dog.

3. video game progress

I logged into FFXIV just so my console would be ON (I had shut it down completely before I left), which meant I did the PlayStation 5 OS upgrade and new TOS agreement. Now the console is asleep, or will be soon. I'm purposely leaving it sleeping so when patch hits tomorrow night, it gets updated and I won't have to wait for it before I play on Tuesday morning. I didn't do much in game, just checked retainers (they sold a bunch of things! That's what happens when you don't log in for over a week) and spent some poetics on HW relic materials.

and that's it for today.

Put your mp3 player/phone/streaming collection on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results.

Driving through this world unknown
I'm not like them, but I can pretend
'Round and 'round
I blew things out of proportion, now you're blue
Nuneul gama eoseo oh boy Close your eyes. Come on, oh boy

Don't know what's going on, don't know what went wrong
When I pretend everything is what I want it to be

Tell his reverence your story

There is concrete below me and a sky above so blue
I'm a preacher sweating in the pew
Well, I heard he needed some help on the farm
Cover my ears and close my eyes

There's an S under my clothes
hitogomi ni magireteru I can hear your voice

Lights go down, and
I judge by what she's wearing
Breathe in right away
When you leave my colors turn to gray

Ha-ha ha-ha ha-ha ha-ha-ha
